Above is a photo of Corporal Jefferson Godbold’s grave at Rock Island Barracks Prisoner of War Camp. Corporal Godbold, of Company A, was captured in the fighting on Missionary Ridge and died in captivity on Februray 2, 1864. His grave is #349. Many was the friend who was carried to the "Dead House", as the makeshift morgues were called, to await burial. What must have been running through the minds of their comrades as they watched them go. Among the men who probably saw, or even helped carry Corporal Godbold there was your webmaster's great-grandfather, Pvt. John Roberts. He survived Rock Island but not without it leaving its scars on him.
Thanks to Dan Williamson for providing the photo and service record for Corporal Godbold.
